From the Embers of Horror Arose a Phoenix of Compassion

John’s Story

My processing was a labyrinthian filtration system born of horror: I could not protect the closest person I have to a sister from being raped by my uncle. In an instinctive act she shared her secret with me. With his malevolence no longer hidden, the stranglehold of silence around her shattered and the first chapter of my heartbreaks began after that brutal introduction to human sexuality. A new mantra loomed, “all boys are born weapons”. The concept that the male anatomy could be weaponized and worse, used to harm those we hold dearest, was devastating. Her act to tell specifically me, countered compounded toxicity that I was born bad, or worse, born unloved as reinforced by my rage-aholic father’s beatings. What he failed to beat out of me was the degree of light and love my cousin showered into my eight-year-old world. Gashes and wounds weren’t as bad knowing she had it much worse. Never abandoning the spirit of my cousin’s strength, I carry the experience of the most stunningly resilient exemplar of God’s true love.

Honoring Black History Month

An annual celebration of African Americans’ powerful legacy, Black History Month has been honored in California—and nationwide—every February for nearly 100 years, beginning with Carter G. Woodson’s establishment of Negro History Week in 1926. This year, though you’ll find a few parades and festivals remain on pause, there are still plenty of ways to recognize Black excellence in the Golden State and reflect on the continued struggle for racial justice across the country.
“Both the natural landscape and built environment of our state are filled with the significance of California’s African American past,” says Susan Anderson, history curator of the California African American Museum (CAAM) in Los Angeles. “Black history is often under-researched and underrepresented, and there is so much out there for people to experience year-round. Black History Month is a way of opening that door.” Explore, honor, learn, and uplift Black history in California through these February events and others that you can experience any month of the year.

International Day of Women Celebration 2018

At Women on the Move Network, we honor women whose heroism and visions have brought both change and prosperity to others in every community. This month, along with the People for Peace and Prosperity, we held an event for the Third Annual International Day of Women Celebration. This year, we recognized the Time for Change Foundation and its founder, Kim Carter.

For years, the Time for Change Foundation has very honorably empowered low-income individuals by building leadership through programs and housing to create the thriving communities we see around us. Kim Carter has worked to build this program from the ground up. She was recognized as a Top 10 CNN Hero who helps homeless women and children reclaim their lives to this day, which stands for exactly what International Day of Women encompasses and the values it stands for. On March 3, we celebrated the many steps we have taken as women to ensure that everybody receives an equal chance in life, and Kim Carter has helped to make this possible. [Read more…]
